Have you ever taken the time to truly engage with your online community? And we aren't just talking about liking and responding to your posts' comments.

By using social media as it was designed to be used - for socializing - you could be boosting your organic reach and engagement.

Many of us view our business social media accounts through tunnel vision. While we invest time in sharing content that we hope will resonate with our audiences, we overlook the importance of community and being active on social media.

A really effective strategy to increase visibility and reach for your business is to comment on content produced by other businesses like your clients, your providers and your industry partners.

When your business comments on or shares content produced by another business, this engagement appears in other people's newsfeeds - potentially exposing your brand to a whole new audience, for virtually no cost.

This strategy is most effective when you understand your audience. Commenting on content that is relevant to your target audience, or ‘trending’ gives you even more chances of reaching new, relevant customer groups.

So, for example, if you’re trying to target people interested in sustainability - sharing or commenting on related news content could put you in the eyes of new audiences.

But how do you know what to comment on?

Our top tip is to keep your eyes peeled for top-performing or trending content within your niche. Tracking larger accounts that your audience follows, and following hashtags or geotags, are all helpful ways of sourcing relevant content.

Not only do you want to ensure that the content you're engaging with is relevant to your target audience, but you also want to ensure that you’re doing it in a proactive manner.

Jokes, opinions and thought-provoking comments are likely to stand out to potential customers.

The bonus of engaging with other businesses in your community is that you’re ‘warming’ them up, which may even result in them returning the favour and engaging with your content.

Now that sounds like a win/win.
